Castelnau des Fieumarcon

The Village is the remains of a C13 fortified hilltop village and chateau. Now privately owned, the whole has been sympathetically restored to create a scattering of 14 very attractive houses and cottages, together with other buildings, grouped around cobbled streets, open spaces and pretty gardens, and all within the ancient perimeter wall.

The word 'unique' is much over-used, often incorrectly! The Village is truly unique - an extraordinary place to visit and a wonderful place to stay. Simply Gascony is proud to be able to offer The Village and its houses and cottages to our clients as holiday rentals.

History

The original Fieumarcon Stronghold has been dated from 1143. One of the early Fieumarcons was knighted by Richard the Lionheart, Kind of England and Duke of Aquitaine and Gascony. Over the following centuries the family fortunes, and those of The Village, rose and fell until in the mid-C18 the last of the Fieumarcons died without an heir and the semi-ruined property was sold. During the C19 and C20 under various owners, the decline continued until by 1960 few buildings were left standing and hardly anyone lived in The Village.

In 1978 Frederic Coustols, a successful businessman born in the area, decided to buy the ruined village and embark on a long, visionary and ultimately brilliant restoration project. The first two phases of this work, directed by M. Coustols, took over 20 years and have rightly gained many prestigious awards for their historical and architectural quality.

The Fieumarcon stronghold has been restored and today stands as a unique property of 14 individual houses for guests, with a variety of gardens and terraces, a banqueting hall and an open air entertainment space. The Village is a monument to Gascon architecture, filled with antiques and art. The once thriving medieval village has been brought back to life and today is once again a place full of life and fun.

By the early 2000s The Village was ready to move on to the third phase - to develop a variety of locally based, sustainable, stimulating and educational activities centred on The Village. These activities include renting out The Village for Events and holiday rentals.
